Why is it so difficult for us to talk about our mental health? The social stigma of mental illness is widespread. Adding this health problem to the long list of stereotypes is not only difficult on the person suffering from it but also makes people insensitive to the issue at hand.

Why is it so difficult for us to talk about our mental health?

The social stigma of mental illness is widespread. Adding this health problem to the long list of stereotypes is not only difficult on the person suffering from it but also makes people insensitive to the issue at hand.

According to research, despite being ‘aware' of the different mental health conditions, people still choose to ostracize those who suffer from mental illnesses. The perceived stigma of this health problem leads people to subject the person suffering from it to internalized shame.

It’s more than important that we normalize talking about mental illness

Here’s some food for thought ― just like medication is taken for other health problems such as diabetes and high cholesterol, the same way, mental illness can be treated with therapy and in other cases, relevant medication.

So, how do you fight this stigma?

  • Talk openly about mental health issues.
  • Educate yourself & others.
  • Listen without bias & judgment. Think before you speak.
  • Be conscious & mindful of your language.
  • Encourage equality between mental and physical health
  • Empower others rather than shaming them.

Everyone simply needs to realize that it’s perfectly ok to not be ok! There’s a bright light at the end of every tunnel, you just have to be willing to walk through the dark.
